Back in 2011, on his first big trip into the Victorian High Country, Nomad Moto founder Kurt found out just how crucial an exhaust shield can be.

"I was crossing a river on my KTM 690 when I caught a glimpse of smoke in my mirror. I pulled over, hopped off… and my pannier was on fire. My gear was melting before my eyes. I started a five-day ride with nothing but ashes. Luckily some good adventure mates pitched in — one lent me socks, another a shirt — and we made it work. A great story in hindsight, but completely avoidable."

WHO NEEDS THE HEAT SHIELD?

If your exhaust runs hot and close to your luggage — this is for you. One melted pannier will cost you ten times the price of a heat shield.

High Exhaust Bikes

Exhaust Runs High And Hot.

Some bikes run their exhaust high up the side — right where your panniers sit. On a long ride that pipe gets seriously hot. Without a shield, your luggage is taking that heat directly. TPU is tough but it's not heat-proof. The shield sits between the pipe and the bag and solves the problem completely.

Exhaust Close To Pannier Racks

Rack And Exhaust Too Close For Comfort.

Your pannier rack sits close to the exhaust and your bags are hanging right next to it. On shorter rides it might be fine. On a full day in summer heat — that proximity becomes a problem. The heat shield mounts to the exhaust and creates the barrier your bags need to stay in one piece.

Running Rackless — Exhaust Touching Or Close.

Rackless systems sit tight to the bike — that's the whole point. But on some setups the exhaust is touching or borderline touching your bags. Don't risk it.
