Riding Solo as a Nomad

Riding Solo as a Nomad: Essential Tips for Staying Safe on the Road

Riding solo is one of the most freeing experiences an adventure rider can have. No schedules, no compromises—just you, your bike, and the open road. But with that freedom comes a level of responsibility that shouldn’t be ignored. Whether you’re heading into the outback or tackling remote trails, proper preparation is key. As someone who rides solo often, here are the precautions I take to ensure I return safely from every adventure.

1. Carry an EPIRB or Two

When riding in remote areas, mobile phone coverage can be non-existent. That’s why carrying an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) or a satellite phone is crucial. If things go south, an EPIRB will send a distress signal with your location to emergency services. A sat phone allows you to call for help if needed, making it a solid investment for any serious adventure rider. I personally carry both a Spot Tracker mounted on my bike and an EPIRB attached to my backpack. This ensures that if I become separated from my bike, I still have a way to call for help.

2. Ride at 60%-70% of Your Ability

Riding solo means you don’t have the luxury of a quick rescue if something goes wrong. That’s why it’s smart to dial it back and ride at 60%-70% of your ability. The goal isn’t to push limits; it’s to get home safely. Fatigue, unexpected terrain changes, and wildlife are all unpredictable factors that can catch you off guard—taking a cautious approach can mean the difference between a great ride and a disaster.

3. Have Confidence in Your Bike

Know your machine inside and out. Regular maintenance is key to avoiding mechanical failures in remote areas. Ensure your tyres, chain, fluids, and electrical systems are in top shape before every ride. Carry essential tools and spares like a puncture repair kit, tyre levers, and a pump. A well-maintained bike means one less thing to worry about when you’re far from civilization.

4. Tell Others Your Plan

Before heading off, always inform someone about your route, expected arrival time, and any contingency plans. This simple step can be a lifesaver if something goes wrong. If you don’t check in when expected, at least someone will know where to start looking.

5. Use a Tracker

Spot Trackers or other GPS tracking devices are a game-changer for solo riders. They allow friends and family to monitor your progress in real time, and if needed, you can send an SOS signal. Just make sure your subscription is active before you leave! Alternatively, smartphone apps like Life360 can also help keep people updated on your location, but they rely on mobile coverage.

6. Be Prepared for Anything

Going solo means being entirely self-sufficient. Carry enough water, food, and fuel to cover unexpected delays. Pack extra layers for changing weather conditions and know how to handle basic first aid. A small injury in the city is an inconvenience; in the middle of nowhere, it could be life-threatening. A well-stocked first-aid kit, emergency bivvy, and fire-starting tools should be part of your standard kit.

Final Thoughts

Solo adventure riding is incredibly rewarding, but preparation is everything. When you take the right precautions, you can push into remote areas with confidence, knowing you’re ready for whatever comes your way. Ride smart, stay safe, and embrace the freedom of the nomadic life.

See you out there—somewhere on the dirt.
