Preparing for an Outback Adventure Ride

Get It Right Before You Hit the Red Dirt

There’s something about an outback adventure ride that gets under your skin. Maybe it’s the sense of freedom, the isolation, or the challenge of taking on some of the toughest terrain in Australia. But one thing’s for sure—the outback doesn’t suffer fools. Out here, preparation isn’t optional. It’s the difference between an epic ride and a story nobody wants to hear.

Whether you’re heading out for a quick lap of the Flinders or crossing the Simpson, here’s a solid guide to getting yourself and your bike ready.

1. Know Your Route (And Have a Backup Plan)

Fuel stops, water sources, and safe campsites don’t exactly grow on trees out here.

  • Plan your ride using reliable maps and GPX files.
  • Download your route to a GPS unit and phone—and carry paper maps as a backup.
  • Share your plan with someone who’s not on the ride.

Nomad Tip: We always build routes with extra fuel range in mind. If you think you’ll just make it, you probably won’t.

2. Prep Your Bike Like It’s Going to War

Your bike is your lifeline. A minor breakdown at home is an inconvenience. Out here, it’s a different story.

  • Tyres: Go with a solid adventure tyre. We run Motoz Tractionator RALLZ (Rear) and Pirelli Scorpian Rally Race (Front) or similar, perfect for mixed conditions. Or in Smalller bikes we run Dunlop 606's. We also use Ultra Heavy Duty Tubes.
  • Suspension: Set it up for the extra weight of fuel, water, and luggage.
  • Luggage: Soft panniers are the way to go—lighter, safer, and easier to live with. We run Nomad Moto Strzelecki Soft Panniers. They’re waterproof, tough, and field-tested in the Aussie outback.
  • Spare parts: Bring tubes (even if you’re tubeless), spare levers, and basics like a clutch cable and spark plugs.

3. Bring Tools to Fix What Breaks

If you can’t fix it, you’re stuck.

  • Tool roll: Carry the tools that fit your bike, not some generic kit.
  • Tyre levers, patch kit, and pump: Non-negotiable.
  • Zip ties, wire, and duct tape: If you know, you know.

4. Pack the Right Riding Gear

Outback conditions can be brutal—boiling days, freezing nights, and everything in between.

  • Helmet and jacket: Lightweight and ventilated gear is essential.
  • Hydration: A 3L hydration pack minimum. We’re working on one here at Nomad Moto (stay tuned).
  • Gloves, goggles, and layers: Be ready to ride in 40°C heat and then sleep in 2°C temps.

5. Travel Light, But Don’t Cut Corners

  • Sleeping gear: Swag, tent, or a tarp if you’re game.
  • Food: Dehydrated meals save space, but we always make room for a tin of baked beans and a cheeky campfire brew.
  • Water: Carry more than you think you’ll need. A bare minimum is 5 litres, but 10 litres gives you options.

6. Stay Connected—Even When You’re Off-Grid

No phone signal? No worries—if you’ve got the right gear.

  • PLB (Personal Locator Beacon): If things go pear-shaped, this is your lifeline.
  • Satellite phone or GPS messenger: Great for regular check-ins.
  • Ride with a mate when you can. Solo rides are epic—but riskier.

7. Respect the Outback

  • The wildlife doesn’t care about your ride plan. Kangaroos, cattle, and camels can appear out of nowhere.
  • Weather: Flash floods, bushfires, and heatwaves are all part of the outback. Plan for them.
  • Locals and stations: Respect gates, stock, and landowners. Buy a beer or a burger at the roadhouses that keep this part of the world ticking.

Final Thoughts

Adventure riding in the outback is about freedom, challenge, and exploring places few people ever see. But it’s also about preparation and respect—for the land, your bike, and yourself.
At Nomad Moto, we design gear to handle the punishment of the Aussie bush because we’ve ridden it. Our Strzelecki Soft Panniers and Roll Bags are built to last, whether you’re out for a weekend or a month-long mission.

Ride smart. Ride far. Ride Nomad.
