How to Carry Fuel on Motorcycles Off Road
A servo missed by 30 km is annoying. A servo missed by 180 km on a sandy outback track is a different problem. Knowing how to carry fuel on motorcycles properly gives you options when the route gets remote, the headwind comes up, or the planned roadhouse has shut early.
Extra fuel is not a fashion accessory. It is a risk-managed piece of kit. Petrol is heavy, volatile and unforgiving when it leaks. Carry too much, mount it badly, or use the wrong container and you can turn a range problem into a crash, fire or wrecked load.
The goal is simple: carry only the fuel you need, in a container made for fuel, fixed securely where it will not move, rub through or cook in the sun.
Work Out How Much Fuel You Actually Need
Start with your real-world consumption, not the number you got on a calm highway run with no luggage. Sand, corrugations, mud, soft shoulders, high speeds, a loaded bike and a howling headwind all push fuel use up fast.
Check your bike's usable tank capacity, then look at the longest distance between reliable fuel on your intended route. Add a proper buffer for detours, closed pumps and bad conditions. For many riders, that buffer is 20 to 30 per cent. On genuinely remote routes, it may need to be more.
A Ténéré 700 carrying camping gear through deep sand will not return the same figures as an unloaded bike on bitumen. An 890 Adventure ridden hard can drink more than expected too. Be honest about your throttle hand and the terrain ahead.
Do not automatically fill every spare container because there is space to do it. Five litres of petrol weighs roughly 3.7 kg before you count the container. Ten litres is a serious lump. That weight affects handling, braking and how hard the bike hits the ground when it goes over.
Carry Fuel on Motorcycles in Proper Containers
Use a purpose-built fuel container. Full stop. It needs a cap, seal and material designed for petrol, plus a shape that can be mounted without being crushed or chafed. Cheap bottles, random plastic jugs and old drink containers are false economy. They can split, leak, swell or leave you guessing what is inside.
Rigid fuel cans work well when you have a solid mounting point and enough room. They are straightforward, protect the fuel well and are easy to inspect. Their downside is bulk. A hard can mounted high or wide can catch on scrub, add leverage to the bike and make a loaded ADV feel top-heavy.
Fuel bladders are useful when space is tight or when you only need extra range for one section of a trip. Once emptied, they pack down small. But they still need protection from abrasion, sharp edges and exhaust heat. A fuel bladder stuffed loose into a pannier with tools is asking for trouble.
Small fuel bottles can suit riders who need one or two extra litres, not a second tank's worth. They are compact and easy to place, but several small containers create more caps, more sealing surfaces and more things to check.
Whatever you choose, follow the container manufacturer's filling limit. Leave the specified headspace. Petrol expands with heat, and an overfilled container has nowhere to go except out through a seal or vent.
Mount It Low, Tight and Away From Heat
Where you put fuel matters as much as the container itself. Keep the weight low and as close to the bike's centreline as possible. This reduces the pendulum effect that makes a bike feel vague in ruts, loose corners and rocky climbs.
The best location depends on the bike, its exhaust layout and your luggage system. Some riders use dedicated side mounts. Others secure fuel in protected outer pockets or purpose-designed holders. The answer is never to lash a full can to the top of a roll bag because it was convenient at the servo.
Avoid the exhaust, muffler, headers and any area that gets heat-soaked after a slow climb. Also keep fuel away from chain runs, tyre travel, brake components and sharp rack edges. Turn the bars fully. Compress the suspension if possible. Check that nothing can contact the fuel container through the full range of movement.
A rackless luggage system can be a good platform for a small, properly protected fuel load because it keeps mass close to the bike. But the luggage is not automatically a fuel mount. Soft bags are built for gear, not for containing spilled petrol. If fuel is carried alongside luggage, use a dedicated holder or isolated pocket and make sure the container cannot rub against welded seams, buckles or hard tools.
Nomad Moto systems are built to sit tight for rough riding, but the same rule applies to any setup: if the fuel moves, fix the mounting before you leave town.
Keep Fuel Separate From Water, Food and Sleeping Gear
Petrol contamination is miserable on a trip. It ruins food, wrecks sleeping gear and can make a hydration pack unusable. Even a small leak leaves a smell that follows you for days.
Keep fuel physically separate from water bladders, cooking gear, clothes and electronics. Do not rely on a dry bag as a petrol container. Welded TPU luggage is tough and waterproof, but it is luggage, not a substitute for a certified fuel vessel.
Pack your heaviest non-fuel items low as well. Tools, tubes and spares belong close to the bike rather than piled on top. A balanced load makes it easier to feel when something has come loose before it becomes a major problem.
Check the Setup Before Every Remote Leg
Fuel mounts earn their keep on corrugations, not in the driveway. Before a long dirt section, stop for two minutes and inspect the lot. Check cap tightness, straps, mounting bolts, rubbing points and any sign of wetness or fuel smell.
After the first 20 to 30 km of rough track, stop again. Straps settle. Loads shift. What looked tight at camp may be loose after a few hundred corrugations. This is especially true after a fall, when a container may have taken a hit even if it still looks fine.
If you carry a rigid can, make sure its mount cannot wear through the container. If you carry a bladder, inspect the folds and contact points. If there is any doubt about a seal, move the container away from heat and deal with it before riding on.
Never decant fuel near flames, cigarettes, camp stoves or a hot engine. Let the bike cool if practical, use a controlled pour spout if your container has one, and wipe up any drips before restarting. Petrol on gloves can end up on grips, controls and your gear, so clean that up too.
Know the Legal and Practical Limits
Rules around transporting fuel can vary by state, territory, land manager, ferry operator and event organiser. Check the requirements for your route, especially before boarding a ferry or entering a national park with specific fire restrictions. A legal container is not an excuse for an unsafe load.
There is also the practical limit: more fuel means more range, but it does not make a badly planned route safe. Tell someone where you are going, carry water, have navigation that works without mobile reception, and know where the next dependable fuel is likely to be.
For most adventure riders, the best setup is not the biggest one. It is the smallest approved fuel load that gives genuine margin, mounted low, protected from heat and checked often. That keeps the bike lighter, the luggage stable and your attention where it belongs: on the track ahead.
